This magnificent creature can astound with its colossal size, reaching weights of up to a whopping 90 kilograms, while its majestic carapace can stretch up to 1.07 meters. This grand species faces an additional challenge - a slow maturation process. Females take between 4 to 17 years to reach maturity, a long and vulnerable journey that significantly contributes to the decline in their population. In recognition of these threats, the IUCN Species Survival Commission—Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group initiated a draft review in 2011, recommending that the Arrau turtle should be classified as critically endangered. This status underlines the urgency of conservation efforts. 🚨
