AFTERMATH OF WILDFIRES CHANGES THE HABITAT AND CAN IMPACT WILDLIFE IN BOTH GOOD AND BAD WAYS

“It’s a disturbance on the landscape that changes habitat,” he said.

“In the years that follow, you see reduced survival and, over time, that population starts to decline,” he said.

“Sometimes you’re not necessarily doing them the favour you think they are if that care is going to result in them becoming habituated, losing their fear for people,” Wolfer said. “We have to think by helping it, ‘Am I going to reduce its long-term survival potential?’ Animals are tough, much tougher than we give them credit for.”

Keep dogs away from wildlife

“People may forget that their pet dog is a predator and they can injure and kill wildlife if not properly controlled,” said Wildlife Officer Joe Nicholson. “Dog owners are liable for the damage they cause to wildlife.”

By winter, wild animals are just trying to survive the cold and lack of forage. If dogs chase them, they quickly expend their already limited fat stores, leading to poor health and eventual death from starvation.
